How to get started building your Stereo or Home Theater system
Simaudio has continued to "trickle down" technology from their flagship Evolution series into their more affordable, Classic line of Moon products, making ever better sound available at lower prices. They have a new integrated amplifier, the i-3 SE at $2400, The Equinox SE CD player at $2600, the LP5.3 and LP3 phono preamplifiers at $1400 and $499 respectively, the P5.3 preamplifier at $3800 or $4250 with built-in phono section, and the W5.3 power amplifier at $5000.
The 100 watts/channel MOON i-3 SE integrated amplifier combines numerous technologies found in Simaudio MOON preamplifiers and amplifiers. Offering very high quality sonic performance, the i-3 has always represented an affordable alternative to the MOON i-5 and i-5.3. Based on the aesthetics of the well-established MOON Eclipse CD Player and the audio circuitry of both the MOON Nova CD & MOON Orion DVD Players, the MOON Equinox SE operates with an internal upsampling rate that features 24-bit/352.8kHz processing. The new SE (Special Edition) versions of the MOON i-3 and Equinox benefit from electronic parts with higher tolerances in several key areas of the circuit, including improved toroidal transformers in the power supplies. The result is improved sonic performance.
The MOON LP5.3 phono preamplifier represents a significant step forward in phono preamplifier design. Particular attention has been paid to noise levels and dynamic range, making the LP5.3 one of the quietest phono preamplifiers ever, equal to or even superior to many models at significantly higher price points. Sonically, it portrays all the Simaudio hallmarks such as clean, powerful, fast, and extended bass combined with an open midrange and airy extended high frequencies. It has very extensive and flexible end-user adjustments for gain and cartridge resistance and capacitance loading. The balanced outputs allow you to optimize connectivity to a balanced preamplifier, yielding a significant improvement in noise floor, dynamics and midrange transparency. Also, the LP5.3 will support almost any moving magnet or moving coil cartridge with its multiplicity of user-adjustable gain settings. If you fall in love with your LP5.3 and decide you want to make it even better some day, you'll be able to purchase an upgrade to the power supply which consists of an external module that you can plug into the main chassis for improved performance.
The MOON P5.3 is Simaudio's newest preamplifier in the MOON Classic Series. It is a balanced, stereo design employing many Evolution series technologies. Representing a complete overhaul of earlier MOON Classic series preamplifiers, it employs numerous technologies from the Evolution series. For example, the audio circuitry is based on the MOON P-7 preamplifier. Significant features include an oversize power supply, three stages of DC voltage regulation, an exceptionally short signal path (measuring only 10 inches in length from the rear panel's input to output connectors and yielding a much faster transient response), a zero-feedback, open loop circuit topology using absolutely no capacitors anywhere in the audio signal path, and much more. Featuring five line-level inputs, a user-configurable "home-theater ready" input, an IR input for external control and a 12V trigger for convenient operation, the P5.3 is as flexible as it is sonically excellent. An optional internal phono preamp is available with adjustments for gain level as well as capacitance and resistance loading. The bottom line is a balanced stereo preamplifier that is virtually impossible to beat at its price point.
The MOON W5.3 balanced, stereo power amplifier produces 150 watts/channel into 8 ohms or 300 watts into 4 ohms and can be configured for mono-block operation. This model is the successor to the MOON W-5 and encompasses all of the circuitry improvements found in Simaudio's Limited Edition series. Employing Simaudio's "Advanced Renaissance" amplification circuit, the W5.3 produces a warm, grain free sound common to some of the very best tube amplifiers. Yet it has the reliability of solid state designs. Of course, the tight authoritative bottom end that characterizes MOON power amplifiers is present in abundance. Significant Design Features include a "no overall feedback" design, an oversized power supply using a custom proprietary toroidal transformer design for lower magnetic, electrical, and thermal loss, balanced circuitry from input to output, stability with any known speaker impedance, "Class" A output to 5 watts , and much more. It is the perfect companion to a Moon or any other fine preamplifier of your choice.
