The Audio Physic motto is, "No loss of fine detail". This is because they strive, in their loudspeaker designs, to recover every last iota of musical information, down to the most delicate, filigreed nuance. Towards that end, and with the goal of achieving better performance in all aspects of their loudspeakers, Audio Physic has introduced three new, floor-standing models: the Yara Superior at $3495, the Tempo VI at $5495, and the Virgo V at $12,995.
To continue the success which the Yara line has enjoyed over the past six years, Audio Physic has decided to revamp its Yara line by creating a new top model, the Yara Superior. All components underwent a complete update, representing the cutting edge of technology and loudspeaker design. An emerging generation of woofer/midrange drivers, implemented here for the first time, has set a new performance benchmark by using more powerful magnets, larger and longer voice coils, and more sophisticated diaphragms, spiders, and surrounds. This has improved both small and large signal behavior while significantly reducing distortion. The new tweeter uses a powerful, double magnet system and a front piece of solid aluminum for stability and low resonance. It has a large cavity behind the coated soft dome and a copper-plated pole piece to ensure high frequency reproduction which is detailed while being both perfectly smooth and utterly laid-back. Finally, even the cosmetics have been updated with oval grilles that make the Yara Superior look more elegant than ever before.
While the new Tempo VI 3-way model also has some small cosmetic improvements over its predecessor, most of its advances are, so to speak, under the hood. It uses the same, superb, soft dome tweeter as in the Yara Superior discussed above, while the midrange driver is a new and unique design called Hyper-Holographic Cone Midrange (HHCM) that was designed for the best Audio Physic models. (See Virgo V discussion below.) This revolutionary midrange driver results in a slightly sweeter and more transparent sound than the previous model while, at the same time, increasing detail and resolution. The visual appearance of the slender Tempo cabinet has hardly changed, the front panel still having a seven-degree tilt to compensate for phase differences between the tweeter and midrange drivers. The curved side panels and many chambers and braces all work together to reduce resonances and increase stability. The Tempo VI is built according to the Audio Physic push-push technology which is used in all of their multi-woofer models. The two side-mounted woofers are effectively arranged back-to-back, mounted magnet to magnet, to avoid cabinet resonances. All of this superb construction combines with the newest Audio Physic technology to create the best Tempo ever.
The latest incarnation of the famous Virgo series is the Virgo V. The changes and updates for this version are more extensive than ever in Virgo history. The Virgo V could be called a scaled down Avanti, with which it shares the cabinet design and the highly-sophisticated interior structure. The tweeter is an entirely new design known as the Hyper-Holographic Cone Tweeter (HHCT). New, light, and stiff membrane materials have allowed Audio Physic to design cone-shaped tweeters which are not subject to problems that can develop in soft-dome models. The HHCT has an extremely lightweight, stiff aluminum diaphragm coated with ceramic, and there is a small soft dome covering the interior. The tweeter is driven by a magnet system comprised of four neodymium plates that ensure high performance and efficiency. As a result, the tweeter is capable of reproducing a holographic sound field which seems to come from out of nowhere. Working in tandem with the HHCT is the new Hyper-Holographic Cone Midrange Driver alluded to in the Tempo VI discussion. The HHCM uses a novel basket construction which combines the best characteristics of aluminum (stiff with excellent heat conduction) and plastic (superior internal damping). Both characteristics are important in loudspeaker manufacturing. If the two materials are efficiently combined, their properties complement each other in such a way that damping of resonances is perfectly coupled with mechanical and thermal stability. Moving parts such as the diaphragm, the surround, the centering device, and the voice coil are held in proper alignment by a plastic, inner basket designed to achieve maximum damping. The powerful, neodymium magnet is encased in an outside basket made of die-cast aluminum. As a result, any generated heat is efficiently dissipated by extensive cooling fins while any residual vibrations are transmitted to the mounting ring via slim, stiff bridges. Basket and cabinet resonances are effectively kept away from the driver diaphragm (reducing colorations), while heat dissipation is significantly improved (improving power handling). Special attention is also given to the aluminum diaphragm itself which takes full advantage of Active Cone Damping II to avoid ringing resonances that can be associated with stiff diaphragms. Therefore, resonances that would have an adverse effect on the sound quality are prevented right from the start. All of this new technology adds up to a loudspeaker which carries the Virgo pedigree to new heights.
