Sonus faber

In our last issue, we thoroughly described the introduction of the new flagship model of the Cremona line, the Elipsa. Sonus faber felt that the advances represented by this loudspeaker should be made available to the other models in the Cremona series. Thus, we now have the Cremona M at $12,800, the Auditor Elipsa at $5800, and the Auditor M at $5800.

Sonus faber Cremona M loudspeakerThe size and appearance of the Cremona M vary only slightly from the original Cremona since most of the updates are internal. The Cremona M is a 3-way loudspeaker that employs two 7-inch Scandinavian-made bass drivers that use a special magnesium-aluminum alloy cone. There is a pole-piece extension of milled aluminum to assist with heat evacuation from the voice coil's gap. This allows the woofers to play louder and longer without damage. The 6-inch midrange uses a cone made of a special black wood pulp from Scan-Speak which is valued for its midrange neutrality and is housed in its own-vented, acoustic sub-enclosure. The 1-inch high frequency driver is custom-made for Sonus faber by Scan-Speak. It is a dual, toroidal, waveguide, extended-bandwidth, ring radiator tweeter with frequency response beyond 30 kHz. Inevitably, the finest drivers and cabinets in the world mean little without superb crossover integration. This aspect of Sonus faber loudspeaker design has always been an inherent strength. Much of the musicality and sweetness inherent in all of their models derives from the blending of the various design elements into an organic whole. For example, non-resonant, low-order crossovers are used for their inherent dynamics and openness.

Sonus faber Auditor Elipsa loudspeakerSo what's an Auditor Elipsa? The Auditor M, discussed below, is 8 inches wide by 14 inches deep, making it ideal for stand mounting but requiring quite a deep shelf if stand mounting isn't desired. On-wall mounting is, obviously, impractical. Enter the Auditor Elipsa which, like the full-size Elipsa, is wider than it is deep at 13.2 inches wide and 8.9 inches deep. This makes it easy to mount it on a shelf or to wall mount it with the included bracket. That bracket also allows the Auditor Elipsa to be swiveled through a 30-degree arc for optimal balance and imaging. Chief among the physical design elements is the use of the infinite baffle form pioneered on the Stradivari and extended to the full-size Elipsa. The same high-quality drivers and crossovers of the Auditor M are contained within this attractively-curved cabinet. Extensive use of sub-structural stiffening spars breaks up any remaining resonance nodes. Because it is wider than it is deep, this elliptical cabinet construction couples easily with even difficult room acoustics, allowing bass to roll effortlessly into the listening space.

Sonus faber Auditor M loudspeakerThe Auditor M is a compact, 2-way loudspeaker that can be stand-mounted on its own, very elegant Sonus faber pedestal or placed on a deep shelf. As in the Cremona M midrange driver, a 6-inch Scandinavian-made midrange/woofer uses a special black wood pulp fiber cone that is capable of particularly high resolution and dynamic linearity. The tweeter is the same as that used in the Cremona M, and the crossover network is equally-well designed. This is the perfect loudspeaker for those who don't need the extended, deep bass response of the Cremona M but want the same beautifully rich, warm, and spacious sound in a more compact package.

These three new models complete the integration of Elipsa technology into the rest of the Cremona line's main speakers and give the user a large range of price, size, and installation options with which to achieve that formidable Sonus faber performance.
