The great news from Runco is the introduction of new, higher-performance and larger-size LCD and plasma models and the expansion of the OPAL technology discussed in our last newsletter into more of these models. Thus, users who have bright rooms now have many more options in the OPAL series from which to choose. There have also been some nice price reductions on numerous models.
In the projector area, Runco has introduced their first LED models, the QuantumColor View Q-750i at $14,995 and the Q-750d at $17,995. The Q-750i features built-in video processing, and the Q-750d is paired with Runco's latest DHD controller/processor where all processing circuitry and input connections are housed in a separate chassis. Both projectors have numerous lens options as well as CineWide and AutoScope. (See our previous newsletters for descriptions of these technologies.)
So what is an LED projector, and what are its advantages? Conventional projectors such as DLP models use a bright lamp and color wheel to create the colors seen on the screen. An LED projector uses no lamp since the light source is an LED array. Also, no color wheel is necessary. This all means that the QuantumColor projectors are 70% more energy efficient than lamp-based projectors, and the owner is relieved of the necessity of expensive, periodic lamp replacement.
Nevertheless, LED projection technology is very complex, and Runco has invested significant resources to become a leader in this technology. The result of this investment is the QuantumColor technology. QuantumColor maximizes LED performance and yields an unprecedented color palette that is remarkable in its naturalness and is incredibly customizable to individual customer tastes and needs. QuantumColor projectors offer the most comprehensive arsenal of colors ever available in a front projector, including DCI (Digital Cinema Initiative), Adobe RGB, sRGB, REC 709 and REC 601. This suite of standards enables correct reproduction of any content. To harness these incredible color choices, Runco created a new Personal Color Equalizer (PCE). This color adjustment method works like an audio equalizer and allows colors to be individually dialed up and down for every video source and multiple personal preferences. The final part of the new technology is Runco SmartColor which carefully controls these color personalizations and prevents unrealistic color distortions. Finally, QuantumColor projectors never lose color alignment as they automatically assess and adjust color calibration every time they are turned on. A lamp-free, LED source is the most important, recent advance in projection, and the Runco investment in the advanced technologies described above makes this company a clear leader in this new technology.
In the area of beautifying your video display, Runco has introduced two new options for their CrystalSeries flat-panel displays, FrameGallery and SilverSheen. FrameGallery includes seven hand-crafted, custom frames that can beautifully surround each CrystalSeries CX LCD display. In concert with FrameGallery, the unique, reflective SilverSheen technology offers FrameGallery customers the option of a mirrored surface on their flat-panel displays. When used together, FrameGallery and SilverSheen give the appearance of a large, attractive mirror when the video display Is not in use. There are obvious cosmetic and performance benefits to having these optimized options built into the display as opposed to adding after-market, third-party mirror systems in front of an existing flat-panel TV.
