How to get started building your Stereo or Home Theater system
One of the most important philosophies embraced by Simaudio is their continuing dedication to bringing you affordable high-end products based on the no-holds-barred, cost-no-object products located at the top of the Moon price range. This year is no exception, and Simaudio has introduced new and exciting products at both ends of their price spectrum.
The Moon 350P preamplifier ($2499, add $500 for optional phono and USB DAC input cards) is the first preamplifier Simaudio has had at such a low price in quite a while. This preamplifier, a balanced design with circuitry derived from the Evolution series, includes 7 line-level inputs (2 XLR, 4 RCA, 1 mini-jack on the front panel for portable digital players), a fully-discrete headphone amplifier circuit, one pass-through input for home theater use, and a full-function monitor loop. Being a modular design, the Moon 350P accepts optional plug-in cards. These are (1) a 24-bit/192kHz high-performance D/A converter with USB, optical, and RCA inputs, and (2) a configurable moving coil/moving magnet Phono stage. Remote control is included in the price. (The DAC module is heavily based on the new 300D stand-alone Digital-to-Analog converter discussed below.) Construction and sound quality are, of course, pure Simaudio, and anyone who has seen and heard their products knows what that means. For those who have not yet had the privilege, all you have to do is audition one of their components and hear how it sounds compared to virtually all other solid state gear to understand.
The Moon 400M monoblock power amplifier ($3249 each) is a fully balanced, differential design that uses Simaudio's advanced Renaissance no-global feedback circuit to produce 400 watts into 8 ohms and 650 watts into 4 ohms. The 400M also uses proprietary components such as their Moon bipolar output transistors and a custom toroidal transformer design. This amp has powerful controlled bass, an open and expansive soundstage, and a high damping factor. Combining all of this allows the Moon 400M to drive any loudspeaker effortlessly. The 400M is their most affordable high-power amplifier ever. The Moon 400M's are Class A-A/B, each with a huge mains power transformer, 100,000 microfarads of power supply capacitance, and an output section with an astonishing 2000 watts of power. In all respects, the 400M exemplifies everything that Moon amplifiers are famous for. The amplifier is extremely quiet, with a very low noise floor (better than -106dB), and has a special transformer shield to prevent noise from radiating outside the chassis. The sound is characterized by incredibly tight and tuneful bass, open and transparent midrange, and highs that are pristine, clean and clear.
Not everyone needs or has the budget for monoblock amplifiers. As a result, Simaudio has introduced the Moon 330A, a two-channel power amplifier at $3249. Based heavily on the 400M, both internally and externally, the 330A also features balanced, differential circuitry, produces 125 watts/channel of power into 8 ohms (250 watts/channel @ 4 ohms), and 400 watts in bridged mono mode. The sound is very much akin to that of the 400M, and 125 watts of MOON power should be enough for all but the most demanding volume levels. Either of these power amplifier offerings, when combined with the 350P preamplifier, will bring new levels of performance not previously available at these price levels.
The new Moon 310LP Phono Preamplifier ($1799) and optional Moon 320S Outboard Power Supply ($1399) are Simaudio's latest offerings for phono playback. These are replacements for the Moon LP5.3 and Moon PSX5.3, respectively. Regarding the 310LP, the award winning performance of the LP5.3 has been improved upon as a result of a circuit upgrade which yields a more open and transparent sound in the upper-midrange and high-frequencies. Of course the ultra-low noise floor remains uncompromised. With cosmetics that match Moon series models such as the 350P and CD3.3, these models bring improved LP5.3-quality sound in packages that match the newest Moon components.
The Moon 300D Digital-to-Analog Converter ($1599) is the first-ever Moon DAC and is another example of how Simaudio is bringing stellar performance to affordable prices. Much research was undertaken to create a product that is so affordable, and, more importantly, able to harness the incredible flexibility and potential fidelity that is possible with so many of today's most popular music sources. The 300D incorporates four digital inputs. These are two RCA, one optical, and one USB. The USB input allows connectivity to any modern computer, permitting music files to be played back and greatly enhanced by the 300D's fidelity. Alternately, iPod users, with the proper aftermarket accessories, can take advantage of the 300D's digital inputs, allowing the best possible performance from virtually any file type. Finally, the RCA or optical inputs allow the 300D to be used with a suitably-equipped computer or music server for high-resolution playback, up to 24-bit/192kHz, to achieve performance that is well beyond the CD standard. Both balanced and single-ended audio outputs are standard. The balanced outputs will make the most of a true high-end music system, with breathtaking performance that belies the 300D's affordable price. A hallmark Moon product, the 300D embodies all that makes Moon products exceptional to music enthusiasts.
The new Moon 750D DAC /CD Transport ($11,999) is an example of what Simaudio is doing at the other end of the price range. It features revolutionary digital technology, the first true 32-bit digital audio playback system to reach the marketplace. With the goal of fulfilling the demands of the most discerning music connoisseur, a variety of new technologies developed since the introduction of the Evolution Series has been implemented. The result is the most realistic and lifelike sound quality yet. In addition, the Moon 750D is extremely flexible. Designed as a fully-balanced circuit that rejects noise and enhances sound quality, the new 750D features Simaudio's new MAJiC-32 circuitry, an asynchronous jitter elimination system. It is built around the ESS Sabre32 Reference Stereo DAC. The conversion process uses 8 DAC's per channel working in 32-bit Hyperstream. The final result is previously-unattainable musical reproduction from digital media, be it a CD, computer, or music server. The back panel features a complete array of digital input and output connections to meet all the needs of today's ever-widening technologies. An optional outboard power supply will be made available to enhance the already-astonishing performance of the 750D even further. Of course, all of the signature features you'd expect in a Moon product are present: their revolutionary M-Quattro floating suspension, SimLink, i2DCF, and many more. It looks to us as though this will be the digital playback system to beat for the foreseeable future.
The other "ultimate" product introduced by Simaudio this year is the Moon 700i integrated amplifier at $11,999. As with the 750D discussed above, new technologies developed since the introduction of the Evolution Series have been implemented for exceptionally transparent, accurate, and breathtaking sound quality. Designed as a fully differential dual-mono amplifier, the balanced circuitry rejects noise and enhances sound quality. The extraordinarily accurate volume control (new M-eVOL2) uses a phenomenal 530 steps, allowing the user an extremely precise level of adjustment. No other company's volume control system currently on the market comes close. Rated at a very powerful 175 watts per channel, the 700i has power, authority, finesse, and superb control. It uses new Moon output transistors, devices that use the latest technology developed for amplification, specifically made for use in Moon amplifiers. Tighter, more visceral, and tuneful bass will be immediately noticed. The 700i also uses a newly-developed input stage, a circuit that has the ability to reduce noise and preserve image focus and integrity like never before. There is a warmth and naturalness to the soundstage that must be heard to be believed.
The final new product from Simaudio this year is another integrated amplifier, the Moon 600i at $7999. This product redefines the capabilities of an Integrated amplifier at this price range. A fully balanced differential, dual-mono design, it produces the most potent 125 watts/channel at 8 ohms you will ever experience. Like the 700i, it includes all the recently-developed features like the M-eVOL2 volume control with 530 individual steps, proprietary Moon output transistors with unprecedented signal linearity, and an advanced input stage for maximum noise reduction and preservation of image focus. Other features include the revolutionary Lynx amplification circuitry, SimLink, and M-Lock. The 600i is positioned to yield as much of the performance of the 700i as possible at only slightly reduced output power and to do it at a much lower price.
