NEW PRODUCTS

Simaudio/Moon

One of the most important philosophies embraced by Simaudio is their continuing dedication to bringing you affordable high-end products based on the no-holds-barred, cost-no-object products located at the top of the Moon price range. This year the news from Simaudio is all about that trickle-down phenomenon: how the company has taken technology from its very-high-end products such as the 310LP phono preamplifier, the 300D Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC), and the 750D CD player/DAC to create three new, more affordable products. These are the 110LP phono preamplifier at $599, the 100D DAC at $599, and the 650D CD player/DAC at $7995.

Simaudio Moon 110LP phono preamplifierThe MOON 110LP is a very simple component to install and use. Derived from technologies found in its big brother, the MOON 310LP, the 110LP represents another leap forward in affordable phono preamplifier design. The easiest way to describe its sound in a single word would be dynamic. All of the Simaudio sonic characteristics are more evident than in the previous model, the LP-3.3. Hallmarks are fast, tight, extended bass response, a natural, open midrange, and airy extended high frequencies. This is achieved through the combination of an improved power supply and an enhanced circuit layout. Another benefit is an increased input overload margin that eliminates the possibility of higher output cartridges causing distortion. Convenience and flexibility are also key aspects to the MOON 110LP's design. In a matter of just a few minutes you can easily configure both the resistance and capacitance loading for virtually any moving coil or moving magnet cartridge. Some of the 110LP's key design features include:

  • End-user adjustable gain for moving magnet (40dB) and moving coil cartridges (60dB)
  • Two-layer printed circuit board tracings using pure copper for low impedance characteristics. The advantages here include better circuit layout resulting in a much shorter signal path and a vastly improved signal-to-noise ratio
  • Inductive DC Filtering for a significantly lower noise floor
  • Accurate matching of military-grade components with ultra-tight tolerances using surface-mount technology for extremely short signal paths

Simaudio Moon 100D DACSimilarly, the 100D USB DAC employs much of the technology developed for its big brother, the 300D. The MOON 100D accepts USB, S/PDIF and TosLink inputs. While the 100D is intended for use with a computer via the USB input, the remaining inputs allow for interfacing with other source components such as a digital transport. All digital input signals are processed through an asynchronous sample rate converter and then 24-bit DACs. The MOON 100D will faithfully reproduce your digital music in an effortless fashion. The 100D accepts input signals from 44.1 to 192kHz and with a bit-depth range from 16 to 24-bit. Jitter is a virtual non-issue thanks to the asynchronous operation of this DAC. Sonically, it portrays all of the Simaudio hallmarks: clean, powerful, fast, and extended bass combined with an open midrange, and airy, extended high frequencies. Significant design features include:

  • Power supply with 3 stages of DC voltage regulation
  • A fully-asynchronous sample rate converter
  • BurrBrown PCM1793 high-resolution, 24-bit/192-kHz D/A and 8X oversampling digital filter
  • Accurate digital clocking system for exceptionally low intrinsic jitter levels
  • Advanced analog signal path using a DC servo circuit and proprietary analog filter
  • Pure copper circuit board tracings with extremely low impedance characteristics
  • Extremely rigid chassis construction to minimize the effects of external vibrations
  • Accurate matching of high quality components in a symmetrical circuit design

Simaudio Moon 650D CD player/DACThe MOON 650D is both a Digital-to-Analog Converter and a full-fledged CD player. It follows in the footsteps of the highly acclaimed MOON 750D. Here trickle-down technology has created a product that yields almost all of the 750D's performance, but at a more accessible price. True 32-bit, fully-asynchronous, digital audio playback is achieved in the 650D using a fully balanced, differential dual-mono design featuring Simaudio's own M-AJiC32 circuitry (an asynchronous jitter elimination system). Built around the ESS SABRE32 Ultra DAC operating in 32-bit Hyperstream, the conversion process uses an astonishing 8 DACs per channel. The final result is a product that will break down all performance barriers, bringing you closer to the music than ever before. The back panel features a complete array of digital input (4) and output (2) connections to meet all the needs of today's ever-widening technologies. The front panel includes a disc drawer as part of Simaudio's own proprietary drive mechanism. In the coming months, an optional outboard power supply will be made available to enhance further the already-astonishing performance of the MOON 650D. Finally, a plethora of user selectable cosmetic options is available at the time of purchase. While its $7995 price tag is certainly not at the budget level, it is much more affordable than the 750D at $11,995 and makes Simaudio's cutting-edge digital technology available at a much lower price. Significant design features include:

  • True 32-bit, asynchronous Digital-to-Analog conversion
  • ESS Technology SABRE32 Ultra DAC / Digital Filter (ES9016) working in 32-bit Hyperstream to achieve unprecedented jitter immunity and low-level linearity via a patented Time Domain Jitter Eliminator
  • Digital Audio Signal Processing using M-AJiC32 (MOON Asynchronous Jitter Control in 32-bit mode)
  • Four digital inputs (AES/EBU, S/PDIF, TosLink and USB) allowing for a connection to virtually any digital source
  • Proprietary CD drive system mounted on Simaudio's M-Quattro gel-based 4-point floating suspension for vibration damping
  • A virtually-jitter-free, 1 picosecond, digital clocking system
  • Two digital outputs, AES/EBU and S/PDIF
  • Fully-balanced differential digital and analog circuitry in a dual-mono design
  • Separate digital and analog power supplies using 2 independent toroidal transformers
  • Power supply voltage regulation which includes i2 DCf (Independent Inductive DC Filtering): A very short, capacitor-free signal path using a DC servo circuit and proprietary 12dB/octave analog filter
  • 4-Layer printed circuit boards with pure copper tracings for much shorter signal paths
  • Ultra-rigid chassis construction to minimize the effects of external vibrations
  • Accurate matching of the very finest quality electronic components in a symmetrical circuit design
