Vol. 16, No. 1 Spring/Summer, 2013

Simaudio Moon Neo 250i integrated amplifierThis year Simaudio has taken both cosmetic concepts and circuit advancements from their Evolution products and used them to update and upgrade many of the current products in the standard Moon line. The new units retain their old model numbers but have been designated "Neo" to differentiate them from the older ones. Thus, we now have the Neo 220i integrated amplifier at $1850, the Neo 250i integrated amplifier at $2400, the Neo 340i integrated amplifier at $4600, the Neo 350P preamplifier at $3650, the Neo 330A power amplifier at $4300, the Neo 400M mono-block power amplifier at $4300, and the Neo 380D DAC at $4350. All of these models now have a much more impressive and heavier faceplate with curved and sculpted accents similar to those of the Evolution line. As for electronic improvements, the preamplifier and all of the integrated amplifiers have had significant changes made to the volume control circuitry (a refinement to the buffering circuitry of the volume control) , as well as a different calibration of the output section. Power amplifiers and the power sections of integrated amplifiers have had improvements in the design (parts matching) and calibration made to the gain circuitry. The sonic results of these improvements are a more three-dimensional and harmonically rich and expressive midrange together with a sweeter, smoother, and more velvety, natural-sounding top end. These sonic differences are not minor: they are immediately audible, fresh out of the box.

Simaudio Moon 300D V.2 USB DACThe already-excellent 300D DAC has also been improved with the release of the 300D V.2. The entire circuit has been revised with particular attention to the USB input. The original 300D could not play high-definition audio files through the USB input, but the current V.2 can take full advantage of the highest definition files currently available, 24-bit/192-kHz. Other circuit improvements have also been made to raise the level of this DAC's performance across the board. The new model is $2200, and owners of the original 300D can have their units updated for $800. Anyone interested should contact us for information.

Simaudio 180MiND network playerSimaudio has also introduced a network-capable, remote-controllable music system call MiND. This system allows the user to stream music files anywhere around the home and to control the system wirelessly via an Apple portable device such as an iPad or iPhone using Simaudio's proprietary MiND software. (Versions of this software compatible with Android devices will also be available in the near future.) What is required to run this system are the 180MiND unit itself ($1250), a high-quality Digital-to-Analog converter such as those from Simaudio or other high-end companies, and an iPad or iPhone. (Simaudio's own 380D DAC can be purchase with an optional MiND unit already built-in, thus saving space and a connecting cable.) The MiND unit itself can be connected to your network using WiFi or, preferably for sonic reasons, by an Ethernet cable. The output of the 180MiND unit is sent to the DAC with a digital cable, and the DAC's analog outputs are sent to your existing audio or home theater system. Once the proper MiND software has been installed on your portable device, it will have full access to the music libraries residing on your network's computers or on a NAS drive connected to your network. You will be able to see all of the album and song title information displayed on your portable device, and you can select what music you wish to hear and send it directly to your audio system. The MiND software is also capable of controlling multiple zones, so you can install more than one MiND unit and have different music available in different locations simultaneously. The most important thing to remember about this system is that it was designed to Simaudio's extremely high sonic standards, so it allows those who really care about audio quality to have the convenience of remote control streaming without sacrificing performance. There are very few, if any, other systems on the market that can make this claim.
