How to get started building your Stereo or Home Theater system
|Vol. 17, No. 1
This year ARCAM has continued to be very active in the home theater arena with the release of two new, more affordable AV receivers, the AVR380 at $2000 and the AVR450 at $3000. Their latest home theater offerings also include their newest flagship home theater preamplifier/processor at $8500. In the digital music area, there is a new, lower cost Bluetooth Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) called the MiniBlink at $150 and a new, universal iPod/iPad dock called the rDOCK-UNI at $300.
In our last issue we described ARCAM's newest and best ever AV receiver, the AVR750. Now there are two additional models that maintain all of the features of the AVR750 but at somewhat reduced power outputs of 75 watts/channel for the AVR380 and 90 watts/channel for the 450. Since all of the features of these two models (e.g., 4K video compatibility/upscaling, built-in Internet radio tuner, etc.) are the same as those of the AVR750, there's no need to repeat them here as they can be reviewed in our last issue. The principal difference between these two new models is that the AVR380 uses a conventional power transformer while that of the AVR450 has a toroidal design. This difference is responsible for the increased power of the AVR450 as well as other benefits such as better dynamics and lower noise. As always with ARCAM, however, performance is the first priority. These receivers' secret weapon is the amazing insight and clarity they bring to complex soundtracks. Both preamplifier and power amplifier stages are crafted using more than 30 years of audiophile design experience and insight. Conceived to offer premium performance with a wide range of loudspeakers and connectivity to suit the most demanding installations, the AVR380 and AVR450 follow the Arcam tradition of uncompromising sound and picture quality from all genres of entertainment.
While the AV950 AV processor/preamplifier also shares the same features as the above receivers, it is built to a no-holds-barred quality standard that makes it the premier choice for systems where ultimate audio and video performance are required. Every aspect of its design, from the way the chassis is built and acoustically damped to the selection of the finest parts available, is intended to make the AV950 the finest audio and video performer available. When coupled with a first rate, multi-channel power amplifier, the AV950 will yield home theater and music reproduction that are unequalled at or significantly above its price.
Two issues ago in Volume 15, we described the rBLINK, a Bluetooth DAC that allows users to stream, wirelessly from any Bluetooth device, directly to their audio systems. The new MiniBlink is a lower cost version which gives users the same streaming capabilities at a $100 reduction in cost. The MiniBlink uses a high-end PCM 5102 DAC to convert Bluetooth-streamed music to a line level output ready for connection to any audio system with a simple RCA cable. Installation is easy with a simple pairing system for new devices. Music is delivered by ARCAM electronics so, of course, you can be sure of world-class sound.
The rDOCK-UNI is the latest and most versatile iPod/iPAD dock that ARCAM has ever made. It allows users of both the latest and older iPods and iPads to plug their devices directly into their music systems and obtain both greatly improved sound quality and the convenience of remote control. This new audiophile dock for i-devices features the new lightning connector and will allow the music lover to listen at a quality level that no other dock can achieve. You can use the high-quality, internal DAC of the rDOCK-UNI and connect directly to your music system, or you can send a digital signal to an audiophile DAC for even better performance. The rDOCK--UNI will also allow users to connect older 30-pin devices to the dock via a rear-mounted USB connector and obtain all of these same benefits.
