VPI

VPI Scout Jr. turntableVPI calls their new Scout Jr. turntable ($1500) the budget reference, and it's easy to see why. It's a ready-to-use, entry-level high-end turntable, complete with a pre-mounted Ortofon 2M Red cartridge. The new tonearm is 9 inches long with a yoke type vertical bearing and damped turntable-like horizontal bearing. The arm is damped in the horizontal plane and free in the vertical plane. This combination breaks up resonances and ads to the enjoyment of the sound. The Scout Jr. uses a 600 RPM AC synchronous motor to drive the turntable. This is a precision device that is mounted in a separate box on rubber feet for the ultimate in motor noise isolation. The chassis is 1.25” thick black textured, vinyl-covered, non-resonant MDF and supports a machined 1” thick aluminum platter that is damped internally. The platter rotates on an oil bath bearing which is fitted to its shaft with a #2 Jacob's taper for a concentric, rigidly-mounted coupling. The bearing has a PEEK thrust disc and machined, graphite-impregnated brass bushings that use a Thompson Engineering 60 Rockwell case hardened shaft. We show you all of this techno-jargon so you'll know that this turntable is very seriously designed, especially in areas like the tonearm and platter bearings. It really is a high-end device.

VPI Prime turntableOn the other hand, VPI calls the Prime their affordable super table, and we can understand that, too. The Prime is Mat Weisfeld's first solo turntable design (with input from Harry and other members of the staff). The shape of the Prime is meant to be a curvier and sexier look compared to the "classical" look of their models over the past 10 years. At the same time this model has the space needed to accommodate the 10-inch 3D tonearm. They were able to bring down the price of this tonearm because of improved technology and increased volume for printing and supplies. The Prime is a very serious design, and to show you what we mean, its features include:

  • 10 inch 3D tonearm
  • VTA Tower for VTA/SRA on the fly
  • Classic 20 pound platter and bearing
  • Outboard 300 RPM motor housing for maximum motor isolation
  • New "Prime" feet which offer improved isolation and better mechanical grounding
  • Stainless Steel/Delrin record clamp
  • Chassis made of black textured vinyl over MDF with an 11 gauge steel plate bonded to the underside for the ultimate in resonance control and feedback rejection
  • Four solid Delrin corner assemblies designed for isolation and mechanical grounding
  • A 300 rpm 24 pole AC synchronous motor capable of high torque and quiet operation installed in a separate aluminum and steel machined assembly
  • Inverted bearing - hardened stainless steel shaft, 60 Rockwell chrome hardened ball, spinning in a phosphor-bronze bushing and sitting on a PEEK thrust disc. The belt side load is placed at the center of the spinning bearing for zero teeter-totter effects.
  • High-accuracy, machined 20 pound aluminum platter and motor pulley for undetectable speed variations and rumble greater than 85dB down

VPI MW1 Cyclone record cleaning machineVPI's final new offering this year is a new record cleaning machine, the MW-1 Cyclone. The Cyclone is the first and only record cleaning machine (that VPI is aware of) that vacuums dirt off the record clockwise and counter-clockwise to clean out the grooves thoroughly. The motor is a high-torque 18 RPM forward and reverse turntable motor. The MW-1 is housed in an aluminum water proof case with a welded stainless steel water tank which drains out the back. The bidirectional turntable motor allows for you to scrub and vacuum in both directions for the ultimate in deep cleaning. The professional quality toggle switches have a 100 thousand cycle life. The turntable motor is designed to last decades and is inspired by the original HW 16 which is still working 30 years later. The vacuum motor is so powerful that it's rated to lift mercury 120 inches or four full atmospheres! It has no problem pulling the grime off your records. All components are heavy-duty, industry-quality, and a 2-inch Delran record clamp is included as a final touch. For a really tough durability test, they took the final model and kicked it down a flight of steps. That model is still cleaning records in their listening room and can do so in less than 30 seconds! (Although the roll down the steps did do a number on the paint job!) This is a truly well-designed machine and can be relied upon to keep your records pristine for many years to come.
