Anthony Gallo
Anthony Gallo Acoustics first introduced their Reference Nucleus 3.0/3.1 loudspeakers in 2004 to the acclaim of both audiophiles and such magazines as The Absolute Sound which gave them a rave review in their October/November 2004 issue. These loudspeakers were heralded as offering incomparable performance in their original $2600 to $3300 price range. Unfortunately, rising manufacturing costs in the intervening years would have forced their price to increase to over $4500. Rather than simply increase the price without improving performance, Gallo opted for a complete redesign of the product, resulting in the recent release of the Reference Nucleus 3.5 at $5999.
The new version retains the aluminum/stainless steel structural elements of the vertical column, round midrange enclosures, and woofer canister, but the remainder of the loudspeaker's components such as the tweeter, midrange, woofer, and crossover have been completely redesigned and updated. The Gallo proprietary tweeter has been upgraded to the CDT3 version. It now is more spacious and detailed, does a better disappearing act, and blends better with the new graphite-fiber midranges than before. The new ceramic-coated, aluminum woofer is more efficient than the old woofers and yields much clearer and more powerful bass with smaller power amplifiers than was possible with the 3.0 and 3.1 models. Finally, the 3.5 was designed using their Optimized Pulse Technology Level 2 system. (The OPT system was first discussed in our last newsletter in the discussion of the Gallo Strada.)

The result is an entirely new loudspeaker which offers sonics as remarkable and cost effective in its price range as the original model did for its cost. Of course, a $6000 loudspeakers cannot be as appealing to as many people as a $3000 model, but comparison to other products available at its cost will show that the new 3.5 offers the same extraordinary performance in its price range as the original model did. That's because Anthony Gallo (the man, as opposed to the company) threw every single improvement he could think of into the design to lessen the agony of the price increase. He even replaced the ubiquitous spikes seen on every loudspeaker these days with a specially-designed, acoustically-isolating polymer pad that optimizes the loudspeaker's performance on both bare floors and carpeting. All of this is why the online magazine 6Moons gave the 3.5 its once in a "Blue Moon" award. For the full review, please visit
It's also why the July 2010 issue of Soundstage said that the 3.5 is competitive with any loudspeaker costing upwards of $20,000 per pair! For that full review, please visit
Of special interest to current 3.0 and 3.1 owners is the upgrade program which will allow them to convert their older models to the full 3.5 version. Please contact us at the store for more information. We invite all who are intrigued by this product to audition it at the store and see it for themselves. Come hear the return of a legend, even better than before! |
