Revel

Following the update of their Performa series to the new Performa3, Revel has now turned its attention to improving its entry-level line, Concerta. We now have the new Concerta2 series which is comprised of a bookshelf model, the M16 at $900, two floor-standing models, the F35 at $1600 and the F36 at $2000, the C25 center channel at $750, the S16 on-wall surround model at $900, and the B10 subwoofer at $1500.

This range of completely-new models combines thoughtful cosmetic design with the acoustical research and technical advances for which Revel is well-known. The Concerta2 Series isn't just a minor upgrade as it incorporates technologies and materials that are directly drawn from the higher-end Performa3 loudspeakers.

A new, patented, fourth-generation Acoustic Lens waveguide improves tweeter to woofer blend and significantly improves off-axis response for consistent performance over a wide listening area. 1-inch aluminum-dome tweeters with phase rings derived from Revel's Performa3 Series work in conjunction with the waveguide to deliver detailed and articulate high-frequency response.

The newly-designed woofers feature aluminum cones that help keep distortion to a minimum by improving rigidity without increasing mass. The result is transducers that behave like ideal pistons throughout their operating range, which is fundamental to proper cone design.

Finally, all design parameters are scientifically verified for accuracy. The Concerta2 series features computer-optimized driver positioning and network transducer integration that results in ideal performance and lifelike imaging and soundstage. As with all Revel models, performance is verified with double-blind listening tests.

The F36 and F35 floor-standing models are 2 1/ 2-way designs which replace a mid-range driver with a third woofer. Using a custom crossover network design, the two lower woofers are dedicated to low frequencies while the upper woofer also reproduces mid-range frequencies. This design increases the sensitivity of these models to 91dB and 90dB, respectively, and also improves power handling and dynamics.

The enclosure designs are both beautiful and functional. The curved side panels reduce apparent size while the cabinet construction, which is inherently stiff, decreases harmful internal standing waves. The clean, modern design has no visible fasteners and the grilles attach magnetically for quick and simple removal and replacement. These are features rarely seen on loudspeakers at this price point.
