Pro-Ject has unveiled two new models, the Debut Carbon Evolution turntable at $599 and the Debut Pro at $899.
The Evo is a sweet upgrade to the well-known Debut Carbon DC. It features the brand's one-piece, carbon fiber tonearm technology, electronic speed selection, suspension elements from the EISA award-winning X1 model, and the excellent Sumiko Rainier phono cartridge.
The main platter upon which the record is played should be heavy and non-resonant. The Debut Carbon EVO approaches this problem by using a 12-inch steel platter, now lined around the bottom side of the outer edge with an anti-resonant, thermo-plastic elastomer (TPE). The result is a heavier platter with minimal noise over an expertly engineered main bearing and sub-platter. The added rotational mass enhances the flywheel effect, yielding reduced wow & flutter and higher stability while damping resonance. The Debut Carbon EVO benefits from the special TPE-damped, height-adjustable metal feet of the X1 turntable. Not only do these vibration-absorbing feet help isolate the turntable, they are easy to adjust, and leveling the turntable is now very simple.
Motor vibration is a challenge for any turntable designer to overcome as those vibrations can transfer to the tonearm and cartridge, negatively affecting sound quality. The Debut Carbon EVO features a new motor suspension system, decoupling the motor from the plinth to reduce the transfer of vibration. The company created the new motor suspension system using a steel plate and TPE decoupling to isolate the motor while ensuring the spindle is perfectly aligned with the sub-platter for impeccable speed stability and smooth transfer of rotational force. This turntable also has a sophisticated onboard power control circuit that generates a very precise signal to ensure accurate and consistent speed regardless of power supply fluctuation. Finally, there is also electronic speed change for 33 and 45 RPM speeds, and the turntable can even play 78 RPM records.
The PRO extends the tradition of the Debut collection with a new, striking design, featuring a satin black and brushed-nickel color scheme that emphasizes the strengths of the technologies within the turntable. Tracking performance is enhanced by an all-new 8.6-inch tonearm that consists of a one-piece carbon fiber wrapped, aluminum arm tube for excellent rigidity and reduction of harmful resonances. A heavy-duty, nickel-plated, machined-aluminum bearing block ensures that the tight-tolerance tonearm bearings move freely, allowing the tonearm to track precisely across the entire surface of the record. The Debut PRO also features a die-cast aluminum platter with integrated TPE damping, resulting in the perfect combination of mass and low internal resonance.
Finally, the tonearm height and azimuth are both adjustable, allowing for the use of a wide range of cartridges. The excellent Sumiko Rainier phono cartridge is included.
